Burma: Nearly 24 hours after a powerful earthquake struck Myanmar, the true scale of the disaster is becoming clear. The tremor was so intense that its effects were felt in neighboring Thailand.
Initially, Myanmar’s military government reported a lower number of casualties, but today, a sudden increase has been confirmed. According to official figures, the earthquake has claimed the lives of 1,002 people, while 2,376 have been injured. Most of the fatalities occurred in Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, which is close to the epicenter.
Rescue operations are in full swing. A rescue team working in Mandalay stated, "We are digging with our bare hands to pull people out."
In Thailand, all eyes are on a collapsed under-construction building. The building’s collapse has left around 100 workers missing, with their families anxiously awaiting any news. So far, six deaths have been confirmed.
In a rare move, Myanmar’s military leaders have issued an urgent appeal for international assistance. Neighboring countries, including China and India, have been among the first to send aid to the affected region.
